Our Process of

Water Transfer Printing

Step 1
This process is commonly known as “Water Transfer Printing” or “hydrographics,” and these terms will be used interchangeably in this guide. The film used in Water Transfer Printing is composed of a water-soluble material called PVA (polyvinyl alcohol). When placed on the water’s surface, the film softens and becomes highly pliable.

Step 2
Next, the operator sprays an activator onto the film while it rests on the water. This step liquefies the inks in the film, preparing them to adhere to the freshly painted part. Once activated, the operator slowly submerges the part through the film. As this happens, the inks flow around the contours of the part, transferring the pattern seamlessly onto the item.

Step 3
Next, the operator rinses off the residual PVA material and sets the part to air dry. Once the part is completely dry, the operator applies an automotive-grade clear coat over the item. This provides UV protection, scratch resistance, and other protective properties and ensures a long-lasting, durable finish.

  • Mask off areas not to be painted.
  • Choose appropriate spray equipment and nozzle size.
  • Stir and thin the paint as needed.
  • Wear PPE and ensure good ventilation.
  • Perform a test spray on a scrap piece.
  • Hold the spray gun 6-12 inches from the surface.
  • Use smooth, even strokes, overlapping passes by 50%.
  • Allow the paint to dry as per manufacturer guidelines.
  • Clean equipment immediately after use and dispose of waste properly.
